Sweet Charity Mittens

This pattern is for mittens in 4 sizes : small kids, big kids, ladies and men. I recommend using Plymouth Encore or Ella Rae Amity Yarn (because then the mitts will be machine-washable), but any worsted-weight yarn will work for the pattern.

Materials: 100 grams of worsted-weight yarn. Double-pointed needles, size 7, stitch markers, stitch holders, tapestry needle

Gauge: 5 stitches = 1 inch

Instructions: Cast on 24 (32, 32, 40) stitches. Divide stitches on to three needles and join into a round, being careful not to twist stitches! Work in Knit 2, Purl 2 ribbing for 2 (2.5, 3, 3) inches. Divide stitches for palm: 12 (16, 16, 20) stitches on needle #1 and 6 (8, 8, 10) stitches each on needles #2 and #3. Work Stockinette stitch for .5( .75, 1, 1.25) inches.

Thumb gusset: for right mitten, knit 1 stitch. For left mitten, knit 9 (13, 13, 15) stitches. For both: place a marker, M1, knit 2 (2, 2, 4), M1, place a marker, finish round. Knit 2 rounds without increasing. Round 4: knit to the marker, slip marker, M1, knit 4( 4, 4, 6) stitches, M1, slip marker, finish round. Repeat last 3 rounds until 8(10, 10, 12) stitches are between the markers. Next round: knit to the marker, slip next 8( 10, 10, 12) stitches to a holder for thumb. Cast On 2 (2, 2, 4) stitches and continue around.

Palm: continue to work in Stockinette Stitch in rounds until length of little finger or about 4 (5, 5.5, 6.5) inches. Shape top, decreasing as follows: Round 1: Needle #1: Knit 1, SSK, Knit to the last 3 stitches, knit 2 together, knit 1. Needle #2: Knit 1, SSK, Knit 1. Needle #3: Knit to the last 3 stitches, Knit 2 together, knit 1. Round 2: knit. Repeat these 2 rows until 12 (16, 16, 20) stitches remain. Weave top stitches with Kitchener Stitch.

Thumb: slide stitches from holder on to 2 needles. With 3rd needle, pick up and knit 2 (2, 2, 4) stitches from Cast On stitches on palm. Knit in the round until thumb reaches bottom of nail or about 1( 1.25, 1.5, 1.75) inches. Decrease rounds: Round 1(Knit 2, knit 2 together) around. Round 2 knit. Round 3(Knit 1, knit 2 together) around. Round 4knit. Break yarn and pull through remaining stitches. Fasten off. Yeah! A pair of mittens.
