Explanation:

This web site uses Javascript to provide features that enhance usability and a built in Microsoft ActiveX Control that overcomes Internet Explorers inability to properly display certain graphic image formats.

During April, May and June, we're knitting mittens for the Buffalo City Mission and Cornerstone Manor. This is our super-easy, super-gratifying mitten pattern if you need one! Feel free to use your favorite mitten pattern as well! Mittens can be dropped off at the shop through June, and I'll make sure they get to where they're needed!

Learn to KnitMITTENS!

 

Materials:

            110 yards of a bulky weight wool yarn            

                Needles, size 9 or 10

                Stitch markers

                Tapestry needle

 

Gauge:

       4 stitches = 1 inch

 

Instructions:

            -      CO 32 sts.

                -      Work in St st (Stockinette stitch = knit 1 row, purl 1 row) for 4 rows.

-          Work in K2, P2 ribbing for 2 inches.

-          Work in St st until hand measures 1 inch. End by working a P row.

-      Thumb gusset:  Row 1 -K 14 sts. Place first st marker on needle, inc one st in the

        next st, K1, inc 1 st in the next st, place second st marker on needle, K rest of row.

-          Row 2 P

-          Row 3 K to st marker, slip st marker, inc one st in next st, K to last st before st marker, inc one st in next st, slip st marker, K rest of row.

-          Repeat rows 2 & 3 until there are  9 sts between markers. End by working a P row.

-          Thumb: Row 1- K 14 sts & place on st holder.

-          K 9 sts & place rem sts on 2nd holder.

-          Row 2- P thumb sts.

-          Row 3- K thumb sts.

-          Repeat rows 2 & 3 until thumb measures 2  inches. End by working a P row. K2tog across to last st, K1, cut yarn leaving a 12 length. Thread yarn through tapestry needle & thread through remaining sts on needle. Gather sts tightly & sew thumb seam with an overcast stitch.

-          Hand: Pick up sts from first st holder. Pick up & K 3 sts from base of thumb, then K sts from second st holder. Work even in St st until hand measures 6 inches from cuff. End by working a P row.

-          Row 1- (K2, K2tog) across row.

-          Row 2 P

-          Row 3- (K1, K2tog) across row.

-          Row 4 P

-          Row 5 K2tog across row, cut yarn leaving an 18 length. Thread yarn through tapestry needle & thread through remaining sts on needle. Gather sts tightly & sew side seam. Weave in ends.

-          Wear mittens proudly & tell everyone I made them myself!
